In My Backyard - A Photo Essay of Armchair Reef Cayman Islands


As a young boy, growing up in the late 1960's, television brought me a new world outside of magazines and books. A media that added sound to sight, with action which captured my full attention. My knowledge of the world was forever expanded. On television I watched with the rest of the world, and witnessed man's first footsteps on the moon. What I fell in love with was "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau." photographed with him.

Beautiful stories and places never known came to life, and so did horrible images of war. Violence was brought into living rooms on the nightly news. Things we wanted to keep away from our children slipped onto the television screen in marketing commercials. Distorted reality, perversion commonplace, a type of Pandora's box was fully opened, with the lid lost.

In 2004 we moved to the Cayman Islands and also chose not to subscribe to cable television. The trade off has resulted in quality family time discovering nature's beauty. We swim, snorkel and dive in the Caribbean Sea in our backyard. We gather seashells , walk the beach as we talk about our day. We photograph the sunsets and sit underneath an old Casuarina Pine Tree sipping a glass of wine or soda. Then we watch the night sky to spot shooting stars.

This book is a documentary of the extraordinary life we now live, and wish to share with you.
