Learning Underwater Photography Can Be a Rewarding Experience!
Introduction to Underwater Photography.
A camera is a box which has an opening on one side and
a thin material which is sensitive to the energy wave of light.
Exposing this film for different time periods changes the chemicals to record the different
brightness and colors reflected by images. The developing process of the film enhances the differences where the
image captured in time can be projected onto a light sensitive paper and be developed (by use of Negatives), or be
projected as seen as in slides.
Photography Underwater is the best means of recording memories and showing others what the Underwater
environment is all about. The advertising medium of the 1970's placed expression of text into visualization
with the printed illustration to communicate a message. The wide spread use of photographs in articles and in
advertisements increased the need for wider range of pictures and increased the base of use of Underwater photography
equipment. This lowered the price allowing a more diverse amount of talent to develop techniques and styles.
In today's community of divers, everyone can share in taking photographs Underwater by the use of a disposable
camera system. The quality of the photographs are mostly used for sharing what was seen with friends and family.
Once a diver seeks education and information usually they rent or buy quality equipment to test their ability at
creating attractive images. Practice in developing the skills to judge distance, lighting, subject mix, backgrounds
and composition is more learning from ones mistakes to discover the right techniques for each photographer.
Some photographers
will dive a location and find the setting and arrangement of a composition without a camera. Then will plan during
a surface interval what would look best and how to attract a certain fish into the setting. By use of a dive buddy to
help locate the selected fish, guide into the composed image and will bracket a whole role of film on the subject changing
the exposure and lighting. This will achieve a few good images and one or two excellent compositions where the fish
became expressive and posed just right. Those are the awe's when you know you got the right shoot.
