Marine Awareness
Understanding of Reef Ecology.

Shy Hamelt, Parrots Landing 65ft, Housed Canon AE-1 w 28mm lens, Grand Cayman The study of the marine environment is done through scientific method. The elements of nature which control placement, growth and density are first identified. These can be salinity of the water, nutrients, sunlight distribution, currents and rainfall influences. The Depth of which the different color spectrum of sunlight penetrates, sets the boundaries of distribution for all plants and animal life. The area of stationary objects are surveyed for plants and algae which forms the base of the food web.

Sponge growth on Cayman's North Wall, 120ft, Nikonus 28mm lens Tarpon Alley. Next is the corals and sponges which provide habitat for the starfish, shrimps, crabs, octopus and small cleaner type fish. The primary focus here is those marine animals which are herbafors and those which are carnivorous. As the depth of the reef differs, observation of the types of marine will change in food sources and habitat.

As a last area of consideration are the pelagic fish which are not dependent on the reef for survival and how they utilize reefs for cleaning stations. Another consideration is the impact of the local community has on the reef environment such as fishing and pollution.
