Reef Identification: Grand Cayman Reefs

Marine Awareness
Texas Rivers & Lake Diving.

Cray Fish and Diver, Comal River, New Braunfuls, Nikonus IV, 35mm lens with 2:1 Macro extention tube

There are many types of fresh water dive sites. Each offers a different environment of aquatic plants and animals, temperature, visibility and experience level. Spring fed rivers offer the best in visibility and the most diverse of plant types and animal abundance. The Comal River, Aquarena Springs and Bandera Springs offers the best in Texas. Lakes are very abundant in Texas, however the depth, the type of feeder rivers and bottom composition will determine the visibility, temperature and diversity of aquatic plants and animals.

Most Lakes and quarries will only have aquatic plants growing to a depth of 10 to 15 feet and limits the breeding habitat which determines the density of the fish population. The Algae bloom will also limit the sunlight penetration and result in a thermocline at 40 to 70 feet. By trying the different sites around Texas your confidence and experience level will increase to be a safer diver on other diving excursions.

Every week several different groups of divers are lead by experienced PADI Divemasters and Instructors. Comal River is the Third weekend of each Month, with Friday Night Dives and Saturday Freshwater Ecology Awarenesss dives and discussions. This is a easy dive of drifting the river and observing the aquatic life. Mostly for those who are new to the sport or those needing practice. Travis Lake in Austin offer both beginner levels and advance level of diving experiences.
