Jaguar Reef Lodge, Sittee River, Belize
The Divers Meca of Adventure.
Belize has been the destination to many divers for years. Mostly because of the
unsoiled reefs and unique history of the country. Most divers venture to San Pedro
on Ambergris Caye, which is an island off the coast and most never venture to the
main land to explore the Mayan Ruins, rivers with spectacular waterfalls, jungles
and mountains.
The timing of visitors stay and the added cost of venturing from the island results
in the lost of the greatest beauty of the country. For those divers which are more
adventurous the isolated caye's and the south part of the country offers the best of
land excursions and diving the most remote, unexplored and isolated reefs.
The area around Sittee River offers both Jungle, Monitions and fantastic reefs. The
resort is on the beach with beautiful jungle river flowing with Manatees and
crocodiles, the trees have four foot Iguanas sun bathing on the branches, with
tropical birds of all kinds echoing the call of the wild. A Jaguar Preserve is 15
minutes from the resort and a rainforest nature trail is in the same area.
Just off the beach is scattered corals and a boat ride of ten minutes will place you
on a reef full of anemones and clown fish of great abundance. This reef starts in
nine feet of water and drops to 40 feet. This reef is where the black lobster lives and
has visibility varying from 10 ft to 50 feet. This reef is the best for Marco photography
in the Caribbean Sea. A longer boat trip will take to the walls or the coral atoll of
Glovers Reef.
The dive sites along the barrier reef are exceptional with walls of deep-sea Fans and
sponges starting at 40ft and walls the plummet to 300 ft. Visibility is an average 100
plus and reefs are filled with reef fish because the fishing pressures in this area are
almost non-existent. These walls of the barrier reef is the Underwater
photographers wish in dreaming of an untouched reef filled with beauty, color and
abundance of fish life and spectacular sponge growth and colors.
