About 200 collections are added each year. Although the Collection is worldwide, deep-sea and pelagic fishes and eastern Pacific shorefishes are emphasized. Included are large holdings of shorefishes from the Gulf of California and Panama and an extensive skeletal collection of both dried preparations and cleared-and-stained specimens in glycerin, with more than 700 species represented. The otolith collection contains otoliths from approximately 500 species.
